Happier Eyes, Happier You: Eye Health Education and Assessment for the Future Generation

With the astounding number of 80 to 90% of young adults in Southeast Asia suffering from myopia “short-sightedness” as reported by the Research School of the Australian National University, it has come to our knowledge that possibly our youth might have been affected mostly by the prolonged hours of digital screen usage and lesser encouragement of outdoor activities. With this said, MOG has come about to organizing an event focusing on educating our youth at Sunway University and this collaboration has provided us an amazing opportunity to reach out to university students to educate them while also having their eye health assessment done to further provide them with consultation on how to maintain a good eye health condition from our professional optometrist.

The eventful day was held on the 7th of July 2022 which included an Eye Health Seminar focusing on tips on maintaining a healthy eye through lifestyle, diet, habit, preventions and how to find the best fitting eyewear, lenses and contact lenses. This eye health seminar was conducted by Stanley Tien, Neuro-developmental and behavioural optometrist. Stanley focused on educating the student in regards to the basic understanding of our eyes such as the anterior and posterior segments of our eyes, how common eye diseases affect the mentioned eyes parts, etc. Dr Stanley also shared how the comprehensive eye check introduced by MOG 6-in-1 Vision Experience can assess all parts of eyes to identify any early symptoms.

Recognized by the Malaysia Optical Council as the highest compliance rate, MOG’s vision experience include Personalised Consultation, Eye Health Assessment, Precise Vision Correction, Personalised Lens Prescription, Digitalised Eyewear Fitting and Extended Care Protection. Eye care tips and contact lens handling advice were also given extensively to the students specifically when they had to spend hours studying or reading printed or online resources. In the end of the seminar, a interactive QnA session was conducted and 2 students managed to snatch up a chance to win an Aviator Sunglasses

The second segment of the event was then followed by the eye health assessment led by 3 of our professional optometrist, Ker Siok Ying, Erika Tan, Maryam Anliya. The assessment covers diagnosis such as cataract, dry eyes, AMD (Aged Macular Degeneration – which is more common among older adults, however younger adults may also be at risk as well), glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and many more.

With this event, we hope that more youths are able to be educated early on, as their vision is significant to their livelihood which will furthermore affect their later stages of life if not well maintained with proper consultation and yearly check-ups.
